In the 1920s there were amusement palaces, cafés, theaters and variety theaters such as the famous “Winter Garden” in the 3.5 km long street.

After the city was divided, the Berlin Wall also broke through this street. The world-famous Checkpoint Charlie was located on the border between the Kreuzberg and Mitte districts and thus on the border between East and West Berlin.
From 1961 to 1990 Checkpoint Charlie was the only border crossing the border on the Berlin Wall for foreigners, diplomats, and officials of the GDR. And it was the place where Soviet and American tanks faced each other and the scene of spectacular escapes from East Berlin to the west. The GDR refugee Peter Fechter lost his life here on August 17, 1962, when he was bleeding to death in front of Western observers.

The most famous border crossing in Berlin was the third allied checkpoint used by the Americans. The names were given according to the spelling alphabet. Accordingly, the checkpoint on Friedrichstrasse was given the name „Charlie“. The border crossing in Helmstedt was named “Alpha” and the checkpoint at the Dreilinden motorway crossing was called “Bravo”.

The impressive building of the Berlin Cathedral was once the court church of the Hohenzollern dynasty. It was also conceived as a Protestant response to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and was built during the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II at the end of the 19th century.

After extensive damage to the building in World War II, a simplified reconstruction took place between 1975 and 1993. The baptistery and marriage chapel contains the altarpiece “Whitsun miracle” by K. Begas the Elder.
New Museum, was built in 1843-1859 to relieve the old museum. The interior design presents the history of mankind. It is decorated in historical styles that relate directly to the objects on display and the eras they represent.

Alte National Galerie, was built in 1867-1976 as the “Temple of Science”. The building with its large outside staircase and the bronze statue of Friedrich Wilhelm IV on horseback was rebuilt in the 1950s and has been extensively restored since 1997.

Bodemuseum, was established at the end of the 19th century. With its imposing dome and magnificent entrance hall, the building appears to cross the Spree like a ship. Inside there are several rooms that are individually designed in a style corresponding to the exhibited era.

Pergamon Museum, was built in 1930, 100 years after the island was first built. It contains the Roman gate of Miletus, the altar of Zeus of Pergamon and the processional avenue, and the gate of Ishtar of Babylon.

The approximately 3.3 hectare area is framed by three impressive historical buildings: the Konzerthaus, the German Cathedral and the French Cathedral.

The square was built from 1688 according to the plans of J.A. Nering built. It was originally known as Linden Markt, then Friedrichstädtischer Markt or Neuer Markt. Since the square was used by a Kurassian regiment “gens d’arms” with guard boxes and stables from 1736–82, the name Gendarmenmarkt was created. From 1777 the square was developed according to uniform plans by Georg Christian Unger. It was badly damaged in World War II. On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the Academy of Sciences in Prussia, it was renamed “Platz der Akademie”. In 1991 the previous name was restored.

The Oberbaum Bridge is truly the most beautiful bridge in Berlin. The former border crossing connects the districts of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg. The name Oberbaum hides the old function of the Oberbaum as a Berlin water gate over the Spree. From the 13th century, piles narrowed the Spree in the course of the city fortifications in order to prevent ships from passing through without paying the customs duty. This pile structure was also known as a tree. In 1893 the conversion to a railway bridge was commissioned.

At the end of the Second World War, German troops blew up large parts of the central arch in the Battle of Berlin. Only after the German reunification was the bridge extensively restored and put back in place immediately. Today the building is one of Berlin’s most famous landmarks.
Another attraction in Berlin is the Kaiser Wilhelm Church. It was built in the 1890s in neo-Romanesque style on today’s Breitscheidplatz. The church was part of the emperor’s nationwide construction project to ward off the growing labor movement and was named after his grandfather.

The church was badly damaged in a bombing raid in 1943. After the war, there was a big debate about whether it should be demolished or rebuilt. As a compromise, the architect Egon Eiermann designed an impressive modern church next to the old main tower. The 71-meter high ruin was structurally secured and preserved as a memorial against the war.

The Potsdamer Platz connects the old inner city in the east and the new west of Berlin. This is where the districts of Mitte and Tiergarten meet. Before the Second World War, Potsdamer Platz was one of the liveliest squares in Europe. After the Allied air raids, however, almost nothing remained but rubble. A wasteland was created where the Soviet, British, and American sectors came together. The so-called Dreiländereck was, so to speak, no man’s land and border area.

After the wall came down, plans were drawn up for the development of the huge area. During the 1990s, Potsdamer Platz became the largest inner-city construction site in Europe. The most modern futuristic buildings such as the Sony Center, the Deutsche Bahn Tower, and the Atrium Tower were built. The Berlinale takes place every year in the Theater am Potsdamer Platz, next to it is the casino.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, a huge border strip became free around the Reichstag building. Three modern buildings were erected on the 12,000 m² sites. This is how the “Paul-Löbe-Haus”, the “Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus” and the Jakob-Kaiser-Haus were built in the so-called Spreebogen. Together with the Reichstag and the Federal Chancellery, the ensemble forms the largest government district in the world and one of the most beautiful sights in Berlin.

A stroll through the government district of Berlin is particularly worthwhile in the evening. The futuristic buildings are illuminated by light installations. The Reichstag and its glass dome are also illuminated. In between, you can find segments of the Berlin Wall that are supposed to remind of the time of the division of Berlin.

The Olympiastadion Berlin is located in the Westend district and is the home stadium of the Bundesliga soccer team Hertha BSC. The stadium and the surrounding Olympic Park are an architectural masterpiece and were the National Socialists’ first major construction project. For the Olympic Games in 1936, the large stadium was supposed to present the splendor of the Third Reich. Today, in addition to the sporting events and football matches, there are also major concert events.

Since the renovation and reopening in 2004, the Berlin Olympic Stadium has been a tourist attraction. Around 300,000 tourists from all over the world make the five-star stadium one of the most visited sights in Berlin. Interesting tours through the history of sports are offered on various tours through the area of the Olympic Stadium and the Olympic Park. In addition to the Hertha tour, there are also guided tours that explain the history and architecture of the building. Another good idea is the birthday tour, where 6 to 12-year-olds can show what they can do in terms of sport.

Only a stone’s throw from Alexanderplatz is Berlin’s oldest residential area around the Nikolaikirche . Almost completely destroyed in World War II, the district was rebuilt in the 1980s. A number of historic houses from the 16th to 18th centuries have been reconstructed according to old plans. The most important is the Ephraim-Palais, the Gasthof Zum Nussbaum, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing’s house, and the Knoblauchhaus. The Nikolaikirche is the oldest preserved building in Berlin and today houses a museum for sacred sculptures.

At the shores of the Spree you will find a number of great cafes and restaurants with a view of the water and the Berliner Stadtschloss (City Palace) opposite. In addition, some wonderful Spree Tours start from the steamer landing stage at Nikolaiviertel, which are very popular with tourists, especially in summer.

The wall here is 70 meters long, including the death strip in between and a watchtower next to the road. This entire section is a permanent memorial to the victims of the Berlin Wall who lost their lives between 1961 and 1989. On the other side of Bernauer Strasse is the visitor center, which shows the wall from its first enforcement to its ultimate destruction.

In addition to the regular weekly racing days, various major events such as the German-Russian Festival take place here.

Berlin’s 100-acre botanical garden is a paradise for horticulturists and gardeners with over 22,000 plant species. At the same time, these landscape park is also a popular place for recreation and relaxation.

The garden is located in the Dahlem district in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district. The former royal hop garden was subordinated to the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin at the beginning of the 19th century and moved from the city center to the southwest of Berlin between 1897 and 1910. At that time, the Great Tropical House, the largest of the park’s 15 greenhouses, was built in the graceful Art Nouveau style and the park was expanded to include an arboretum.

Those who are thirsty for knowledge can visit the Botanical Museum and collect a lot of additional background knowledge about the flora.

The city forest of Berlin is only a few minutes’ walks from the Olympic Stadium in the west. The Grunewald extends over 3,000 hectares and is one of the largest green spaces in Berlin.

To the west, the Grunewald forest is bounded by the Havel and is crossed by a chain of smaller lakes. The largest of these are the Grunewaldsee, the Schlachtensee, and the Krumme Lanke. So in summer, you have to pack your swimming trunks and cycle out into the Grunewald, because swimming is allowed on the lakes.

On the banks of the Grunewaldsee lies the Grunewald hunting lodge, the oldest palace in Berlin. It is one of many historic houses that are either in the forest or on the edge of the forest. The Grunewald Tower on the Havelchaussee is also worth seeing. In the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Tower, there is a good excursion restaurant with a magnificent view of the Havel.

The Teufelsberg is a mountain of rubble at the northernmost end of the Grunewald and the second highest elevation in the urban area. In the 1940s, the shell of the defense technology faculty stood on the artificial hill, which was blown up after the war and filled with 26 million cubic meters of rubble from 1950. In the 1950s the US Army built a bugging system on the mountain.

In the Roaring Twenties, Kurfürstendamm was the hippest entertainment district in Berlin. A few “Theaters and Comedy on Kurfürstendamm” still bear witness to this time.
The Kaufhaus des Westens KaDeWe is the most famous shopping center in Germany and the second largest in Europe. The eight-story building was opened in 1907 and offers luxury goods on around 60,000 square meters of retail space. The huge delicatessen department has been a special attraction since the late 1920s. The huge delicatessen hall on the 6th floor is also known as the “Feinschmeckeretage” and is the second-largest food department in a department store in the world.

The 150-meter radio tower is a steel frame construction that was built in 1926 according to plans by the architect Heinrich Straumer. The tower is one of the most striking sights in Berlin and is affectionately known by the locals as the “Lange Lulatsch”. The publicly accessible building has a tower restaurant at a height of 50 meters. From the viewing platform at the top of the tower, you have a magnificent view over the whole of Berlin.

There is no better way of getting under the skin of a city like Berlin than by bike – all the locals do it and the terrain is marvellously easy to handle. There are dedicated cycle lanes, plenty of green space and traffic is surprisingly sane for such a major capital city.

This city has seen it all – the Nazi regime, the Russians, Communism, the Cold War and the Berlin Wall. But despite the weight of its dark history, there is an air of energy and vitality in this new Berlin. An eclectic city brimming with art, architecture, film, theatres, cutting edge design and a raging nightlife, Berlin is emerging as a top European destination.

With that much history and sights to cover, jump on your own two wheels! Start on the Unter den Linden, the heart of the historical Mitte district and the grand avenue of East Berlin. Its wide tree-lined streets mix history, culture, memorials and sidewalk cafes. You’ll find Berlin’s most important buildings of Prussian and German history from the 18th century to the present.

From here take a left at Frederichstrasse to Checkpoint Charlie, the former border crossing point between East and West Berlin. Stop in the museum and be inspired by the ways that East Berliners got to freedom in the West by hot air balloon, underground tunnels, and even in a kayak tied to the rooftop of a car.

Down the road is the Topography of Terror, where the headquarters of the Gestapo and the SS were during the Nazi regime of 1933 to 1945. The excavated interrogation rooms and the second-largest remaining segment of the Berlin Wall share this site, and the imposing Luftwaffe (Air Force) building is across the road. The site’s history is told through an engaging pictorial display that also includes thrilling images of the Wall coming down.

Coast back westward along Unter den Linden, which will lead you to the famed Brandenberg Gate located in the middle of charming Pariser Platz. Twenty years ago when the Wall was going up, East Berliners frantically pedalled across the square towards freedom in West Berlin. Once the Wall was up, Brandenberg Gate was surrounded by barbed wire fencing and you’d likely have been shot trying to get through. Luckily, there is no longer fear or anxiety here now – just the careless freedom of being on two wheels, passing easily through this unified city.

Take a left out of Brandenberg Gate, and stop for a moment at the memorial for the murdered Jews of Europe. The large field of 6-foot steles commemorates the 6 million Jews and others who perished in the Nazi concentration camps. It’s a silent and powerful tribute.

Potsdamer Platz, Berlin

Continue in the same direction to Postdamer Platz, full of shiny highrises and the youth of Berlin. The newly-opened Dali Museum is in the glistening Sony Center. This is all a sharp contrast to the picture display showing the Postdamer Platz of post-WWII, when it was a no-mans land fenced off by terrifying barbed wire and armed guards.

Coast back the way you came and head towards the Reichstag, the seat of the German Parliament. This is another fantastic mesh of old and new, with the pre-war building topped by a stunning glass dome. From the lawn of the Reichstag, you can see the crowds walking along the spiral staircase of the dome, enjoying the expansive views of the city.

Next, lose yourself in the splendid woods of the Tiergarten. There are perfect bicycle paths, overhanging trees to shade you from sun and rain, and lovely pockets of flower gardens. The Café Am Neuen Seen, on the edge of the park’s largest artificial lake, is Berlin’s most popular beer garden, and also serves lovely warm meals and cooling ice creams for the weary bicyclist. Summer brings beach bars complete with sand, the locations of which you can find out from the tourist office.

Pedal out of the park towards the Kurfurstendamm, the main street of West Berlin. You’ll immediately notice the difference between capitalist West Berlin compared to the graceful architecture of Unter den Linden in the East. The Ku’damm, as it is known, is Berlin’s longest avenue for strolling and a lively scene with street artists around Breischeldplatz. There are also chic boutiques and department stores like KaDeWe. Stop at the famous Kaiser Wilhem Church, destroyed by bombs during WWII, but preseverd as a memorial to the horrors of war. The new church next to it, with its dark blue mosaics, is lovely in the early evening.

Museum Island, Berlin

Another possible route, also starting from Unter den Linden, heads east instead. Museum Island is on your left, with five museums and over six thousand years of world history. Across the Spree river is Scheunenviertel, the former Jewish quarter and now a funky area with lots of bars, restaurants and outdoor terraces. On Oranienburger Strasse, you’ll find the Neue Synagogue, which survived Kristallnacht (Crystal Night) of the Nazi regime. In true Berlin fashion, the same street is also home to Kunsthaus Tacheles, a bombed-out department store that now houses an arts center, a café, cinema, and performance and exhibition spaces.

Bicycling is a relaxing way to get around, more fun than a bus tour, cheaper than the metro, and you’ll cover much more than on foot. Berlin also offers many bicycle tours with excellent guides, including the New Berlin Tour, the Inside Tour and the Fat Bike tour. If you decide to strike out on your own, most hostels offer bike hire, and the hotels can point you in the right direction for a bike shop. You can also take your bike on the U-Bahn and S-Bahn underground lines- you just need a ticket for the bike.

Many new outdoor trends spill over from the US to Europe and find more and more followers. Active vacationers put on their hiking boots and reinvent trekking, hiking and cycling. The Germans have also rediscovered the wanderlust, according to the motto “Hiking is not only the miller’s desire”.

Especially city dwellers seek compensation in nature and use the beautiful weather, as soon as the sun comes out from behind the clouds. If you live in Berlin, you can be in the countryside within an hour and look for relaxation in the countryside. Here you meet with friends and in addition to physical challenge and the spirit strengthened.

Years ago, the state of Brandenburg invested in infrastructure. It created cycle paths, where you can reach almost every destination. But otherwise Berlin’s surrounding area has a lot to offer. Here are a few suggestions for your next bike or hiking tour around Berlin.

1Schlaubetal-Wanderweg around Müllrose

The Schlaubetal hiking trail starts at the Große Müllroser See southeast of Frankfurt Oder and leads along its eastern shore. Several forest paths lead to the Wustrower mountains and the Ragower mill. Past some lakes, the path leads through a swampy valley with riparian forest. After that, the destination is not far away – in the outdoor pool Schlaubemühle (nature conservation center) the tour ends at the information center of the village.

Marking: Blue “S” on a white background
Length: 25.4 km

www.schlaubetal-online.de

2Rundwanderweg Köthener Heideseen

The circular walk Köthener Heideseen is located between Magdeburg and Leipzig south of Berlin. The tour starts on the village road of Köthen and runs past the Pichersee. Then you come across the middle lake. This one leaves behind. The hike continues in the direction of Swan Lake. Now turn left towards Wehlaberg to get to the lookout tower. The way back takes place on the other side of the lakes. So you get back to Köthen.

Marking: Green dot on a white background
Length: 8 km

The circular hiking trail Großer Stechlinsee is located 30 kilometers north of Berlin. On the Stechlinseestrasse in Neuglobsow, the trail runs straight ahead, past the glass museum to the information boards of the lake, which Fontane immortalized in his novel “Der Stechlin”. Then we continue along the shore. A short distance leads through the forest to the Polzow Canal. Through several forest paths, the goal, the playground of Neuglobsow, again reached.

Behind the bridge of the village leads the way past allotment gardens, through the beech forest on Tornowsee to the bat museum. This article lists many places and activities that every true Berliner knows. Every local or visitor should have tried it at least once in their lifetime.

Let’s take a look at the great things to do, favorites, and tourist hotspots in Berlin.

1Dine on the TV tower in the revolving restaurant

In the dome of the Berlin TV tower is a revolving restaurant for a 360 degree panoramic view

Anyone staying in the city should do it once. What? Look at Berlin from above and that from the TV tower. The 368 meter high building on Alexanderplatz offers a magnificent view of Germany’s capital. Since its opening in 1968, visitors have been queuing up. An elevator will bring you upstairs. A restaurant offers delicious food.

Every year in October, the Festival of Lights enchants thousands of Berliners and non-Berliners. For several days many well-known buildings shine in the most beautiful colors and sometimes in spectacular patterns.

4Mit dem schnellsten Fahrstuhl Europas fahren

Potsdamer Platz, Berlin

In 20 seconds, the fastest elevator in Europe takes you to one of the most modern buildings on Potsdamer Platz – the Kollhoff Tower. From there you have a magnificent view over Berlin. And there is also something to eat and drink in the Café.So it can live! If you are ever at Potsdamer Platz, you should also look at the other modern buildings.

Potsdamer Platz, which was no-man’s-land during the GDR era, was redesigned in the late 1990s. Imposing is above all the Sony Center. But Potsdamer Platz has more to offer. Film fans are drawn to the Filmmuseum and the Boulevard of Stars, the Berlin counterpart to the Walk Of Fame. Kids should be interested in the Legoland Discovery Center. The Potsdam arcades invite you to go shopping.

5Take Pictures of Berlin from the Funkturm

The radio tower is lovingly called the Lange Lulatsch by the Berliners

Granted, it reminds a bit on the Eiffel Tower, but the Lange Lulatsch, as he is called in the Berlin vernacular, is a real Berliner. It was built in 1926 on the occasion of the third radio exhibition. It is 146.7 meters high and offers beautiful views of our city. Next door are the exhibition halls, where the radio exhibition still takes place every year in August or September.

6Take the subway convertible through Berlin’s underground

The U-Bahn-Cabrio in Berlin Foto: Wikimedia

The U-Bahn-Cabrio looks like a rollercoaster in the Hollywood movie park. But this time the tour leads through the Berlin Underground. On this most unusual sightseeing tour through Berlin, guests travel for two hours along the metro lines. The special thing is that the train has no roof. The routes are lit only for the tour and at each station you get a fitting story told. Start and end of the convertible tour is the underground station Deutsche Oper in the district of Charlottenburg.

7Celebrate on the Admiralbrücke

There’s nothing like a balmy summer evening on the Admiralbrücke in Berlin-Kreuzberg. The infamous Party Bridge is one of the most popular and hip haunts for hipsters as well as tourists. With a beer from Späti in hand you can listen to the latest songs of young musicians.

When the sun sinks over the Landwehrkanal, an unforgettable sense of urban romance spreads. If you want to stay longer, you can order one of the best pizzas in Berlin at Il Casolare. The Italian restaurant delivers to the bridge, but the order takes at least an hour.

8Take a tour with the 100er bus

The 100er bus in Berlin drives past the most famous sights

A sightseeing tour of the 100er bus is a must and cheap (for the price of a normal ticket). The 100er bus runs from the zoo to Alexanderplatz and passes by the most popular and well-known attractions. Victory Column, Reichstag, Tiergarten, Unter den Linden, The 200er bus runs almost the same route, only it also passes the Potsdamer Platz and ends at Volkspark Friedrichshain.

9Visit the largest dinosaur in the world, in the Natural History Museum

The Brachiosaur Brancai is the largest dinosaur in the world, at least what was left of him – his skeleton. But the Museum of Natural History, as it is officially called, has even more to offer than dinosaur skeletons: the history of evolution, stuffed animals, astronomy to the sounds of famous composers, minerals, fish and reptiles. Visiting this museum is not just for scientists, but for the whole family.

10Try Currywurst

Currywurst, one of the most popular Berlin specialties – Photo: Pixabay

Eating Currywurst is a must if you are in Berlin. The “national dish” of the Berliners was created for the first time in 1949 by Herta Heuwer in the district Charlottenburg. There are countless Currywurst stalls in Berlin. The best known is Konnopke’s snack bar in the Schönhauser Allee in the district of Prenzlauer Berg. The popular snack bar has been around since 1930. Curry 36 on the Mehringdamm is also famous.

11Shopping in KaDeWe

The KaDeWe (Department Store of the West) is the largest department store on the European continent. The shopping paradise on Tauentzienstraße has been attracting visitors since 1907. I admit, it is not cheap to shop there, but only a stroll through the KaDeWe is an experience you will never forget. My tip: the food section on the sixth floor serves delicacies from all over the world.

12Boat trip on the Spree

The best way to explore historic Berlin is on a boat trip on the River Spree. Popular is the bridge ride on the Landwehrkanal and the Spree, which crosses the city. The ships pass many well-known historic buildings, such as the Berlin Cathedral and the Reichstag. You will also get to know the new government buildings that were built around the turn of the millennium during the journey.

13
Visit the graves of famous Berliners in the Dorotheenstädtische cemetery

The grave of Karl Friedrich Schinkel Photo: von Anah aus New York Link

At the Dorotheenstädtische cemetery you will find many famous Berliners. The list of prominent and great Berliners who have been buried here is endless. Ernst Litfaß, who invented the Litfaßsäule, Karl Friedrich Schinkel, who was probably Berlin’s best-known architect, and Gottfried Schadow, who created the Quadriga on the Brandenburg Gate, are but a few names.

The cemetery was built in 1762. At that time it was still at the gates of Berlin, because it was forbidden to bury the dead within the city. Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigel lived and worked in the house next door. The house is a memorial and can be visited.

14Explore the Tiergarten

The Tiergarten is the largest park in Berlin and comparable to Central Park in New York and Hyde Park in London. He was a former hunting ground of the elector – hence the name. There are three things that you should definitely do there: rowing, listening to the carillon, and wandering around the gas lantern museum. When the weather is nice, I recommend to discover the Tiergarten with the rowboat. The boat rental is located on the New Lake.

Every Sunday afternoon at 3:00 pm the Carillon, a carillon, is heard. It is located near the House of Cultures, also called Pregnant Oyster. From there, you can capture great views of the capital with your camera. The Reichstag was built in 1884-1894 by Paul Wallot. The inscription “The German People” was added in 1916.

33Take a Trip to the Pfaueninsel and explore the Havelchaussee by bus 218

A little paradise is in the Havel. There are no cars and no restaurant on Peacock Island; only nature, a few buildings and of course the peacocks. Known is the small white castle, which was built at the end of the 18th century.

You can reach the peacock island with a ferry. The pier can be reached with the 218 bus, the historic bus goes along the Havelchaussee. During his journey he passes the Grunewald and passes picturesque bays that invite you to swim on hot days. You can get off at individual stations and explore more specific places. You can climb the Grunewald Tower or visit the mysterious cemetery (Grunewald Forest Cemetery), where suicides found their last resting place.

Today, Hertha is based in the Olympic Stadium. In 1936 the stadium was built for the Olympic Games. In 2006, the stadium was rebuilt for the World Cup. Other attractions include the 77m high bell tower, which you can climb and the sports museum.

35 Visit the Charlottenburg Palace

The Charlottenburg Palace gave the district Charlottenburg its name. From 1695 it was for Sophie Charlotte, the wife of the Elector Friedrich III. built-in the village Lützen. In her honor, Lützen was renamed Charlottenburg. The castle can be visited. Just as worth seeing as the castle is the castle park. It was originally created in 1695. In a mausoleum rests the young deceased queen Luise. Other buildings in the park are the Belvedere and the New Pavilion. All these buildings can be visited.

36 Explore the Gendarmenmarkt, Berlin’s most beautiful place

The Gendarmenmarkt is one of the most beautiful squares in Berlin. The German Cathedral and the French Cathedral were built at the beginning of the 18th century. The twin domes (the Döme) were added in 1785. They gave their names to the two churches. The Konzerthaus (former theater) was built in 1825 by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. In front of the theater is a statue of Friedrich Schiller.

If you are in Berlin for longer, you should consider a day trip to Potsdam. The state capital of Brandenburg has so much to offer. Most visitors are attracted to Sanssouci Palace and its magnificent castle park. To transform Frederick II. The king had his dream palace, where he wanted to spend carefree days, built in 1744. Another dream palace is the New Palace, which was built by the king until 1763.

The historic old town attracts with its newest attractions, the rebuilt castle, where today meets the parliament of Brandenburg and the excellent museum Barberini. The old castle was demolished after World War II, also the Nikolaikirche and the old town hall with the golden Atlas statue are worth seeing.

39Visit the Jewish Museum

Even the architecture of the Jewish Museum is extraordinary. A modern building in the form of a broken Star of David and an old court-house from 1736 form the ensemble. Inside you can expect 2000 years of German Jewish history. The Holocaust Tower is oppressive and frightening.

When you travel to Germany and you don’t want to drop a brick while chatting with the locals, you have to learn about certain comments and questions that will get an eye roll from every German. It is not enough to learn the language and about the history. Also you have to know a few regional peculiarities also.

There are a few bizarre laws and conventions that might surprise you. While locals generally enjoy giving foreigners some leeway, you better avoid a few things if you do not want to leave feathers.

Here are some other phrases you should better not say when you’re in Germany …

1All beer tastes the same

For beer lovers Germany is the ultimate paradise. Wherever you travel you can be sure to find a local brewery, often producing beer in its own distinctive style.

In fact, German breweries produce more than 7,000 different beers from refreshing lagers to bitter dark beer and each region has its favourite. The 10 most beloved beer varieties in germany are Pils, Weißbier, Weizen helles, Colaweizen, Radler, Alkoholfrei, Malzbier, Kölsch, Schwarzbier und Altbier. And I promise you, all of them have a different taste.

However, when you dive deeper to the question if all kinds of “Pils” taste the same, you will find two large stocks of beer drinkers: some find that all varieties taste the same anyway and they simply buy the beer that is currently on sale in the beverage market. The others, in turn, swear that they would also taste their favorite variety blindly among dozens of beers.

In reality some researches found out that the diferenzes are minimal, because today many big beer breweries are standardized to a mass taste.

2Germans are obsessed with rules.

It is definitely true that Germany has a lot of rules and when confronted width bureaucracy you will find yourself in the House of Madness just like Asterix.

But don’t worry, Germans don’t like rules any better than anyone else. Actually they hate them and always make fun of it. Yes, there is a tendency to make rules very explicit and detailed. I guess that has it’s origin in the sciences and engineering, where such precision is actually needed.

However, this approach kind of fails when it comes down to everyday rules, especially in legislation. A prime example would be German tax legislation, which accounts for 80% of the worldwide output in legal tax texts worldwide, each year. A complete disaster!

Here is a little Tipp: If you have to, just fill out the form and don’t ask why. In this case you can’t fight the system.

3Germans drink only beer

Don’t get me wrong, Germans really love their beer, and they have the festivals, breweries and regional specialities to prove it. However, looking past the beer hype, Germany also has an amazing wine region, and their Riesling is popular all over the world. In Berlin, there is also a huge cocktail culture, with amazing bars dotted all over the city.

4Germans have no sense of humour

When I used to live in Los Angeles sometimes I saw a grumpy old man eating in a restaurant. The same stereotype you will find in Berlin also. But that is not the kind of people you want to meet and hang around with.

Here is a good reading, why Germans look like angry and mean to us:

“Tears of laughter trickled down my face and I clapped so hard my hands turned red. But I was surprised at my reaction, for I was being hilariously entertained by a German comedian at Quatsch Comedy Club in Berlin, in a situation that could be considered oxymoronic by many.”

Germans obviously appreciate a show of good humor, as fact made evident with the soaring popularity of these comedy venues in Berlin. In fact, comedy has deep roots in German culture, with a strong appreciation of political satire as well as physical slapstick. Also Germans are very witty when making fun of themselves.

One answer in this article is the komplexity of the German language. When you try to speak with a literal translation of humor, you lose a lot of its meaning that makes a joke funny. As a result you often see a blanc expression on the face of the listener.

However, if you are looking for a good Lough in Berlin you should visit the neighbourhood of Neukölln that hosts a large number of comedy nights.

5Why isn’t this menu in English?

Unlikely other countries in Europe most Germans speak English quite well. Restaurants, Museums and Sights in Berlin are very accommodating towards English speakers and you will find menus in different languages.

When you head out of the more touristy areas, it’s common for cafes, bars and restaurants to offer the menu only in German. But if you ask, most of the waitresses will answer your questions in english.

6I never knew kebabs were German

In fact the Kebap is originated in Turkey. But Berlin has the largest Turkish community anywhere in the world outside of Turkey. The Berlin version of this beloved treat, the Döner Kebab, was designed in the 1970s just for the taste of the people living here.

Today, you can find this version of Kebap all over the city. After a wild Party Night in one of Berlins famous Clubs you will often find some folks gathering at a “Imbiss” to get a Döner. And while sitting there watching the sunrise and chewing your Kebap, you will know why Berlin is the other City that never sleeps.

7Do you wear Lederhosen?

If you want to do yourself a favor, don’t ask that silly question. Because it lets you look funny. Again, Dirndl and Lederhose are traditional Bavarian Costumes. Some Germans love to wear them, when they visit the Oktoberfest. But as to Berlin, you won’t find any people walking around like that.

8I expected East Berlin to look different

When it comes to walking around in Berlins neighbourhoods, it’s unlikely that you will know whether you’re in the East or the West. Lots of Houses were build before the Berlin Wall and townships are not surveyed north, south, east, and west from a point or street.

Berlin is packed full of history, but you wont see a lot of evidence of the Sectors right across the city. Mostly you will find them on Tourist Hotspots like Check Point Charly, East Side Gallery or the Brandenburger Tor.

If you are curious about the Allied-occupied Berlin after World War II take a Day Trip to the Glienicker Brücke where the spies were exchanged or get a bicycle and ride the 160 Kilometer long “Mauerweg” where the Berlin Wall originally was built on.

9Don’t you ever get sick of techno music?

Where will get you this question? What Answer do you expect?

Berlin is one of the planet’s greatest party cities, where your every dream and darkest desire has been turned into live. If you don’t like Techno, go somewhere else. There is also a thriving music scene encompassing many other genre, as well as clubs that play everything from disco to hiphop and R&B.

Some, try Watergate on a Wednesday, Stattbad Wedding on a Saturday, Club der Visionäre on a Sunday afternoon, and then, if you really must, Berghain on the Sunday evening.

Some of the most popular nightclubs are the Berghain. If you don’t get in, try Watergate on a Wednesday, Stattbad Wedding on a Saturday or Club der Visionäre on a Sunday afternoon.
