The Berlin Cathedral was once the court church of the Hohenzollern dynasty. The impressive building was also conceived as a Protestant response to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and was built during the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II at the end of the 19th century.
After extensive damage to the building in World War II, a simplified reconstruction took place between 1975 and 1993. The baptistery and marriage chapel contains the altarpiece “Whitsun miracle” by K. Begas the Elder. In the royal crypt of the Hohenzollern there are around 100 resting places from five centuries.
Today the Berlin Cathedral is one of the most popular sights of Berlin . Sermons, state acts and concerts are still held here regularly.
The 360 ° panoramic view from the dome is one of the most beautiful vantage points in all of Berlin. The arduous ascent of the 270 cathedral steps is rewarded with a spectacular view of the historic center of Berlin.
From the wide parapet, visitors have a magnificent all-round view of other sights such as the Red Town Hall, the Humboldt Forum, Museum Island, synagogue and television tower from a height of 50 meters. From this lofty height you can even hear the music in the Lustgarten, watch the tourist ships on the Spree and look far into the Berlin area. The eight bronze angels that adorn the dome with their musical instruments can also be seen a little closer from the dome.
