Italians are famed for their sense of style and fashion. It’s embarrassingly easy to spot the casual tourist on the streets of Rome, but visitors who attempt the Italian dress sense should also be ready for the impossibility of tackling centuries old cobble stones in high heel, a genetic talent that Italian women are born with. Instead of trying to emulate the locals completely, aim for the moderate middle ground.
Jeans are acceptable in most places and coupled with a nice top or shirt, are even suitable for formal dinners in fussy restaurants or outings to the opera. A cotton knee length dress will be comfortable for summer months and for men, chinos or trousers are far better choices than shorts. Bring leather walking shoes – dressier than sneakers and trainers, but still comfortable enough for traveling. When visiting churches, remember that you won’t be allowed entry unless you are modestly attired, so leave the mini skirts and micro shorts for the beach.
5Attempt Italian
Italians are warm, passionate people and many are only too eager to help the occasional lost and hapless tourist. The easiest way to break the ice and make friendships is to learn a few words in Italian. The basics like “Hello”, “Thank you” and “Please” will literally open doors if you use them often enough. Attempting to speak the language can result in better service, discounts on purchases and even a free drink or two at local bars.
6Accept that plans may not work
If you want efficiency and smooth running trains, you should be visiting Germany. The Italian trains do run, just not always necessarily on time. Don’t stress the petty and accept that in Italy, time and punctuality does not always have the same meaning as elsewhere. This laid back approach can be frustrating sometimes, but it is all part of Italy’s charm.
